LIVING WAGE TO BE PAID BY SHREWSBURY TOWN COUNCIL

After months of campaigning by The Branch Secretary and his fellow officers, Shropshire UNISON are delighted to announce that Shrewsbury Town Council have voted to adopt the living wage. This decision is testament to the hard work and determination of a Local Government Branch that has seen attack after attack on its members terms and conditions. This move will lead to improved living standards for those UNISON members having to survive on poverty pay and will act as a great boost to all our members who can now see the benefits of campaigning when your cause is just.

NPOWERs CHRISTMAS JOB CUTS NIGHTMARE

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, reacted angrily to giant energy company Npower’s announcement of plans to offshore more than 1,400 jobs to India and transfer hundreds of customer support jobs to a private company. The plans will involve the closure of the Npower sites at Quayside, Oldbury and Stoke in the West Midlands with the loss of up to 900 jobs.

The Government must take urgent action to prevent a repetition of the 31,000 deaths linked to cold weather last winter, warned UNISON, the UK’s largest union today (26 November).

 

As new figures show that the “excess winter deaths’ in England and Wales rose by 29% Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said:

 

“The Government cannot cross its fingers and hope for a milder winter, it must take action now.  The big 6 energy companies need reining in.  Prices are rising at the same time as profits are growing.

University staff announce 3 December for second date of strike action

 

University staff across the UK will walk out for a second day of strike action on Tuesday 3 December, announced trade unions representing university staff today (Tuesday).

 

The three unions, UNISON, Unite and the University and College Union (UCU), that took strike action on Thursday 31 October confirmed their members would walk out again in three weeks’ time and be joined by Scottish education union, the EIS, unless the dispute over pay could be resolved.
