UNISON HAILS STRIKE AS A HUGE SUCCESS

UNISON is hailing yesterdays strike action by local government and school support workers as an overwhelming success, with more than one million public service workers reported to have attended picket lines and rallies in protest over this year's pay offer.

Dear Member, As you all know by now UNISON- alongside our sister unions within local government- have called for a day of strike action on Thursday 10th July in support of our campaign to receive a just and fair pay increase after suffering 5 years of below inflation pay rises and pay cuts. In Shropshire we have been hit particularly hard and have seen our pay packets decrease by 22% in 4 years !

UNISON today confirmed that its local government and school support staff members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be taking one day of strike action on 10 July in support of better pay. The decision was taken following a yes vote in a strike ballot, announced earlier today.

Local government employers have offered a 1% pay rise.

UNISON’s local government and school support workers have voted yes to strike action in a dispute over pay. The low paid, mainly women, workers have faced a 3 year pay freeze and have now been offered a 1% pay rise.

The lowest are paid just above the statutory national minimum wage and did not even receive the £250 that Chancellor George Osborne promised they would get two years' running.

Voting was as follows:
For: 49,836 (58.7%)
Against: 35,062 (41.3%)

UNISON TO CONSULT MEMBERS OVER MEAGRE PAY OFFER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: THURSDAY 20 MARCH 2014

 

UNISON is to consult more than 600,000 of its local government and school members over industrial action, following a meagre 1% pay offer made today.

 

Around 50,000 of the lowest paid local government workers will receive a rise that is slightly above inflation, while the remainder of the workforce - around 90% - will receive just 1%.

 

UNISON ISSUES PAY WARNING TO CHANCELLOR

 

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, is today calling on the Chancellor to lift the pay cap on public service workers or face the consequences.  The union is demanding a “fairness package” for public services including a job cuts moratorium as well as a pay rise to match inflation in 2014/15.  In addition the union is looking for a range of benefit increases to help the the lowest paid, underemployed and unemployed.
